Top 10 Most Visited Tourist Attractions

As Ghana continues to see growth in the tourism sector, the Ghana Tourism Authority has released the top 10 most visited tourist attractions in 2023.

Prior to the report, Ghana had a stiff flow of tourists in the country due to the COVID pandemic. However, the steady recovery trajectory post-pandemic shows resilience and growth potential in the tourism sector, as arrivals peak at an all-time high of 1,148,002 in 2023, according to the 2023 Tourism Report. The recovery of tourism arrivals surpasses the pre-COVID peak.

Here are the top 10 most visited tourist attractions in Ghana for the year 2023:

10. Manhyia Palace

Manhyia Palace, located in Kumasi, Ashanti region of Ghana, saw a 5% growth, that’s 57,319 tourist visits.

9. Accra Zoo

Accra Zoo, situated in Achimota Forest, peaked at 71,137 tours, representing 5%. 

8. Bunso Arboretum

Bunso Arboretum

This tourist attraction in the eastern region of Ghana saw 78,203 visitors, tallying at 6%.

7. Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle has been one of Ghana’s most visited national tourist attractions. In 2023, 78,870 inflows—that’s 6%—were recorded.

6. Aburi Botanical Gardens 

Aburi Botanical Gardens

Aburi Botanical Gardens recorded 93,719 visitors at a percentage of 7. However, it is located in the Aburi community in the eastern region of Ghana.

5. Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast Castle records 101,134 sightseers at a 7% tally. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    In 2023, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park recorded 208,577 visitors, representing 15%.

    There are several other tourist attractions in Ghana that missed the top 10 lists but recorded patronage. Some of these include Paga Crocodile Pond, Pikworo Slave Camp, Mole National Park, Tongo Hills, and Shrine, just to name a few.

    According to the Ghana Tourism Authority, the year 2024 is forecast to beat the previous year’s records.
