Maropene Ramokgopa is a prominent South African politician who has held various significant positions in her career. As of March 2023, she serves as the Minister in the Presidency Responsible for Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation. Her experience also includes a term as the Mayor of the Siyanda District Municipality in the Northern Cape from 2006 to 2009.

Born on December 31, 1979, in Polokwane, in the former Transvaal, Ramokgopa grew up in Lebowakgomo, a township just outside Polokwane. She has a background as a former student activist, demonstrating her early commitment to social and political causes.

In 2005, she began her political journey as a ward councillor for the African National Congress (ANC) in the Kgatelopele Local Municipality in the Northern Cape. Her swift rise continued when, at the age of 26, she was elected as the executive mayor of the Northern Cape’s Siyanda District Municipality from 2006 to 2009. In 2009, she transitioned into the civil service as the manager of the Northern Cape Premier’s Office on the Status of Women, marking another significant milestone in her career.

Her involvement in the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) began in 2008 when she was elected to the National Executive Committee. Under the leadership of ANCWL President Angie Motshekga, Ramokgopa held managerial positions in the league and convened its Young Women’s Desk. She was also a part of the National Executive Committee of the ANC Youth League and played a role in an interim task team after its leadership corps was disbanded by the mainstream ANC in 2013. Additionally, she served on the board of the National Youth Development Agency.

In 2014, Ramokgopa assumed a managerial position in the office of the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, then held by Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. In 2016, she was appointed as the South African Consul-General to Mumbai, India, under the presidency of Jacob Zuma.

Upon her return to South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa selected her as his special advisor on international relations in the Presidency. Initially, she served as his chief advisor at the African Union. Notably, in October 2021, Ramokgopa was one of the five special envoys appointed by Ramaphosa to engage with King Mswati during pro-democracy protests in neighboring Eswatini.

Her political influence continued to grow, as she was elected to the Provincial Executive Committee of the Limpopo branch of the ANC in 2022. Later in June 2022, the ANC National Executive Committee appointed her as the coordinator of the interim task team of the ANCWL. In this capacity, alongside task team convenor Baleka Mbete, she will lead the league until it elects a new leadership corps.
