Almar Latour: From Dutch Roots to Dow Jones CEO

Almar Latour

Almar Latour, the current CEO of Dow Jones and Company, has ascended to the pinnacle of the media industry. But his journey from the Dutch town of Welten to the helm of a renowned media conglomerate is marked not just by his leadership but also by his early education, commitment to journalism, and strategic focus on media salaries.

Almar Latour, born and raised in Welten, the Netherlands, embarked on a path that eventually led him to the United States. During his childhood education, he pursued a multilingual curriculum, mastering German, English, Dutch, and French – an educational foundation that would later prove invaluable in his media career.

In 1990, through the prestigious Fulbright Program, Latour crossed the Atlantic to the United States. He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in journalism and political science. His journey into journalism took root during his time at the university when he served as a features editor for “The Penn,” the university’s student newspaper.

Latour’s dedication to journalism propelled him further, and he obtained a master’s degree from American University in Washington, D.C.

His early career began as a reporter at a Chautauqua, New York resort, but it was his internships at Dutch language media and The Washington Times that opened doors. A pivotal moment in his career came when he contributed a front-page article to The Wall Street Journal Europe.

In 1995, Latour’s journey at The Wall Street Journal officially began when he was hired as a news assistant in the Washington, D.C. bureau. His dedication and talents saw him progress to the newspaper’s London bureau before returning to the New York City headquarters. Here, he joined and later led The Wall Street Journal’s technology team, playing a crucial role in the newspaper’s online transformation, which attracted one million digital subscribers.

In 2012, Latour assumed the role of executive editor for The Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones, and MarketWatch. His leadership marked a pivotal moment in the company’s history.

In 2016, he was appointed as the editor and publisher of the newly formed Dow Jones Media Group, later renamed Barron’s Group. Here, his strategic vision and focus on media salaries saw Barron’s grow its subscriber base by an impressive 125%, reaching 299,000 subscribers between 2016 and 2019.

On May 4, 2020, Dow Jones announced that Latour would take the helm as CEO, succeeding William Lewis, and he officially assumed the role on May 15, 2020.

Despite his successes, Latour faced challenges, as in July 2020, over 280 Journal journalists and Dow Jones staff members wrote a letter to him, criticizing the opinion pages for a “lack of fact-checking and transparency” and an “apparent disregard for evidence.” This letter highlighted the importance of accuracy and transparency in media, issues that remain at the forefront of the industry.

Throughout his journey, Latour met his wife Abby, a journalist, in Stockholm. They now reside in New York City with their two daughters, one of whom is Maude Latour, a singer-songwriter, continuing the family’s legacy in the world of arts and media.
